USE CASES

The PILOTING Project consists of a whole software and hardware ecosystem that enables safe inspection and maintenance tasks in Refineries, Bridges&Viaducts and Tunnels.

In this sense, the core of this system is based on a series of tools, which make up the PILOTING I&M Platform.

The PILOTING Inspection and Maintenance (I&M) Platform is a groundbreaking solution for the challenges faced by contemporary engineering initiatives in infrastructure inspection. It addresses issues such as cost-effective data collection, seamless data transformation, and synthesis of insights from extensive datasetsThe success of the I&M Platform is attributed to three key components: the General Robot Control Station (gRCS) for communication among robotic systems, the Data Distribution & Harmonisation Layer (DDHL) for standardizing data, and the Data Management System (DMS) for secure storage and retrieval of critical information. Together, these components make the PILOTING I&M Platform an innovative and efficient solution for overcoming the challenges of inspecting complex infrastructures.

  • The gRCS, acting as the node of connectivity, empowers seamless communication and coordination among diverse robotic systems.
  • The DDHL takes center stage in bridging the gap between the gRCS and the Data Management System.
  • At the core of this platform, the DMS stands as the custodian of data.

Additionally, there are other tools that work in cooperation with these three core modules, such as the AI trained for the automatic analysis of images in real time or the sensors based on IoT technology for the constant monitoring of the asset integrity.
Finally, there is the Intelligence & Visualization Portal (IVP), an interface where the inspection operator can perform inspection planning as well as data visualization and the reporting of the operationv.

To address the inspection goals, the PILOTING consortium has established a workflow consisting of 8 steps for carrying out inspections using the PILOTING I&M Platform, which communicates with the robots in charge of the operation.


Initially, an asset is created, followed by the definition of inspection locations. Subsequently, information is added to the inspection plan, and specific inspection tasks are defined. This plan is forwarded to robotic vehicles, which then execute the inspection mission and collect data (ID). Once the data is gathered, it is viewed and analyzed, and an inspection report is subsequently written. The diagram also indicates a cloud component for uploading and downloading data and distinguishes between pre-mission, mission, and post-mission phases.
